Могильник полностью раскопан за четыре сезона 1972 – 1975 гг. В настоящее время отвалы раскопов высотой 0,5 – 2 м в форме «подковы» охватывают площадку с выбранными могильными ямами в центре. В ходе раскопок изучено 40 погребений, останки 60-65 погребенных, два жертвенных комплекса и остатки трех ритуальных сооружений.
Погребения совершались в больших грунтовых могильных ямах в погребальных камерах в виде прямоугольного деревянного ящика без дна. Дно выстилали войлоком. Погребальные камеры перекрывали плахами, уложенными поперек. На дне некоторых могил найдены столбовые ямки с остатками вкопанных в них столбов.
В погребальных камерах были обнаружены индивидуальные и коллективные захоронения, содержавшие парные погребения детей и взрослых. В двух случаях было захоронено 4 – 5 человек. Покойных хоронили в «позе спящего» или на спине с согнутыми в коленях ногами. Два погребения отличались от остальных. Как предполагают археологи, эти люди погибли вдали от родных мест, их кости аккуратно сложили в кожаную, деревянную емкость, а сверху поместили черепа погребенных.
Покойных хоронили в одежде и с украшениями. Могилы сопровождались богатым набором погребального инвентаря – более 100 керамических сосудов, бронзовые ножи-кинжалы, наконечники копий, бронзовые вислообушные топоры, бронзовые шилья, иглы, височные кольца и браслеты, кремневые наконечники стрел, пастовые бусы, точильные бруски, песты.
Самое важное открытие было сделано в 1972 году – в пяти погребениях могильника археологам удалось зафиксировать остатки колес от колесниц, вкопанных в дно могильной ямы, и большое количество костяных псалиев.
Кроме погребального инвентаря встречаются жертвоприношения животных – лошадей, коров, баранов, собак – в виде целых костяков или отдельных частей (головы, челюсти, конечности и т. п.).
The Big Flat Burial Complex (SM)
In 1973, one of the most important discoveries connected with this site was made. In 5-6 burials, archaeologists found traces of chariot wheels, which were dug into the bottoms of the burial pits. The burials also contained many psalia (Bronze Age horse bridle accessories) made out of moose antler. Many historians think that Sintashta chariots are the earliest in the world.
The chariot complex of the burial ground also included sacrificial inhumations of horses, which were found in more than a half of all burials.

40 burial chambers and 70 buried individuals – The layout of the burial ground is tied to the “ritual house”: the burial chambers are located in an ach-like and linear formations around the “house”.
The architecture of the burial chambers
The construction of a burial chamber began with digging hole in the ground. Inside of a 3.7 x 2.7 m pit, which was about 3 m deep, people made a log chamber consisting of 2-3 rows of logs (the height of the log chamber was about 1 m). Such wooden structures could also be made using wooden boards or split logs. In that case, the walls would be held together with vertical posts.
Since it was important to place the dead and the accompanying grave goods into a hollow space resembling a “house”, the chambers were roofed over. There are many instances of sacrificial animals (horses, cows, dogs) being placed on top of the wooden flat roofs of the chambers. On top of the burials, massive above-ground structures were constructed. Such above-ground structures were also built using large wooden frames, which were topped with domes made out of clay. These structures exhibited clear traces of large mortuary fires.
Specific characteristics of the burials
One burial chamber could contain anywhere from 1 to 5 individuals. The deceased were usually interred into the graves in a “sleeping” pose; rarely – on their backs with legs folded. There are instances of secondary burials that took form of bones being placed in a container. The burials were accompanied by rich grave goods – hundreds of vessels, as well as items made out of metal, stone, and bone.
